Wireless Interference Guidelines
Reliable Wi‑Fi is essential for teaching, learning, and campus operations. Some devices unintentionally interfere with the campus wireless network by competing for limited radio spectrum, which can result in:
- Slow or dropped connections
- Poor classroom and meeting performance
- Reduced reliability of campus systems
Following these guidelines helps maintain a stable and secure wireless experience for everyone and supports OIT’s ongoing efforts to improve wireless performance, capacity, and reliability across campus.
How to Reduce Interference
Devices can interfere with campus Wi-Fi if they:
- Broadcast their own Wi-Fi network
- Use hotspot or Wi-Fi Direct features
Here's how you can help:
- Use a wired (Ethernet) connection whenever possible, especially for stationary devices
- Disable Wi‑Fi on the device when using Ethernet
- Avoid unnecessary wireless broadcasting
Restricted Devices and Practices
Personal Routers and Access Points
The following devices are not permitted on campus as they interfere with UCCS Wi-Fi networks:
- Personal routers
- Wireless access points
- Range extenders
- Travel routers
Personal Hotspots and Tethering
- Keep personal hotspots and tethering turned off while on campus
- Use the eduroam network for wireless access instead
Lab and IoT Devices
- Do not allow devices to broadcast their own Wi-Fi networks (SSIDs)
- Do not use ad hoc or unmanaged wireless networks
- Coordinate with OIT before deploying these devices
Use Ethernet for These Devices
Printers
- Use a wired connection or departmental printers.
- Disable Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot features.
TVs, Streaming, and Other AV Equipment
- Use Ethernet whenever available.
- Disable all wireless features, including:
- Wi-Fi radios
- Guest networks
- Hotspot modes
- Wi-Fi Direct
Other Stationary Devices
- Use Ethernet whenever feasible.
- Disable Wi-Fi when not needed.
- Do not enable hotspot or broadcast features.
Device Requirements and Compatibility
Wireless Compatibility Requirements
- Devices should support WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise
- Devices that cannot meet this requirement may use the UCCS-Guest network, which:
- Is not secure
- Should only be used for non-sensitive activity
2.4 GHz Devices
- Avoid devices that only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
- Prefer devices that support 5 GHz or 6 GHz, or use wired connections
