The UCCS OIT Department will be sending prompts to upgrade all Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 machines before the fall semester. If you would like for your campus-owned Windows computer to have Windows 10 on it, please follow the instructions to request the upgrade.
Features:
- The upgrade is free, there is no cost to you or your department.
- Windows 10 has a start menu similar to Windows 7, which functions very much the same as 7. If you like the look and feel of Windows 8, Windows 10 will be very similar.
- The upgrade will only take a couple of hours and you should not lose any information. While the chance of data loss is low, the OIT Department highly recommends backing up your important information on a regular basis, and especially before a major upgrade.
Let's address a few common concerns:
- "Windows 10 is confusing or is not easy to use:" If you have used Windows 7 or 8, Windows 10 will feel fairly natural. They brought back the Start Button like Windows 7, but it still has many of the new features (plus more) than Windows 8.
- "Windows 10 is still too new, it is loaded with bugs and doesn't work:" This is not true, Windows 10 is a stable operating system.
Performance:
- Windows 10 is much faster than Windows 7 or 8.
- It requires less system resources so older computer are able to run Windows 10 and see faster speeds.
Security:
- By upgrading, your computer will be as up-to-date as possible, meaning that you will not need another major upgrade for a while.
- Since Windows 10 is the newest operating system, it will continue to receive updates from Microsoft, unlike Windows 7 or 8. This means that it will continue to be more secure, keeping your University information safe.
What to expect when you have submitted your request:
- While the chance for data loss is low, we highly recommend backing up your information soon after submitting the request.
- If you would like assistance with this, please contact the Service Desk at the information posted below.
- You will receive a prompt within 24 hours asking to upgrade your machine.
