Awareness and Information Security Training

In order to promote awareness of information security best practices, and to foster the philosophy that "security is everyone's business," all UCCS IT account owners are required to take the general UCCS on-line Information Privacy and Security course within 90 days after they receive their IT account.

You can access both courses through SkillSoft web-based courses via the CU Portal / SkillPort at my.cu.edu.  Then:

  1. Log in with your UCCS network username and password.
  2. Click on the underlined selection, "Click here for SkillPort - CU's Online Learning... also CU's Instructor Led Training. "
  3. Under Shortcuts on the left side of the page, click "CU Custom Curricula."
  4. Then select "University of Colorado:  CUSTOM COURSES."
  5. Scroll half-way down the page, then click on: Information Privacy and Security (All UCCS IT Resource Users must take this course.)
  6. In addition, IT Service Providers must take a second, more advanced course: Information Security for IT Service Providers (for IT Service Providers only)

An IT Service Provider is...

Any person that designs, builds, implements, supports, or provides an IT service to other University employees, students, or affiliates, using a University IT resource.

Examples of IT service providers include: website administrators, workstation support staff, server administrators, software programmers, application developers,

data network technicians, user account administrators, and computer center personnel.

If you have trouble accessing or using SkillPort, contact the my.CU Help Line at 303-492-9999 or mycu@cusys.edu.

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

An on-line course on FERPA is also available on SkillSoft for UCCS employees.  You may also visit the CU-Boulder site about FERPA.
